How is a venogram different from an ultrasound?

Ultrasound is the usual first step. A venogram gives more detailed, real-time imaging of blood flow and is used when a clearer picture of the veins is needed.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Yes — a venogram is performed under local anaesthesia. You stay awake but comfortable, and most patients go home the same day.

It is a very safe, routine procedure. Dr. Richard reviews your history beforehand and the small amount of contrast dye is cleared naturally by your body.

About This Service

A venogram is a diagnostic imaging procedure that maps the veins to reveal clots, blockages, narrowing or faulty valves that standard ultrasound may miss. A contrast dye is introduced and X-ray imaging captures how blood drains through the venous system in real time. This helps Dr. Merwin Richard accurately diagnose deep vein thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency and other venous conditions — guiding the most effective treatment. Performed in our North Bergen Vascular Procedure Center with local anaesthesia and same-day discharge.
