About

What Are ABI & Vascular Ultrasound?

ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index) and vascular ultrasound are the two most important non-invasive tests used to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins of the legs. Together they allow Dr. Merwin Richard to accurately diagnose Peripheral Artery Disease, venous insufficiency and other circulation problems — quickly and painlessly, right in our office.

The ABI test compares blood pressure in the ankle to the arm to detect reduced arterial flow, while duplex ultrasound produces real-time images of the blood vessels to pinpoint narrowing, blockages or faulty vein valves. No needles, no radiation and no downtime.

The Procedure

How the Testing Works

1
Step 1

ABI Measurement

Blood pressure cuffs are placed on the arms and ankles. The readings are compared to calculate the ankle-brachial index — quick and painless.

2
Step 2

Duplex Ultrasound

A handheld probe glides over the skin, producing real-time images and sound of blood flowing through the arteries and veins.

3
Step 3

Mapping Blood Flow

The ultrasound maps areas of narrowing, blockage or venous reflux to guide diagnosis and treatment.

4
Step 4

Same-Day Review

Dr. Richard reviews the results with you the same visit and recommends the next steps if treatment is needed.

What We Treat

What These Tests Detect

Peripheral Artery Disease

A low ABI reading and ultrasound imaging detect narrowed or blocked leg arteries — often before serious symptoms appear.

Venous Insufficiency

Duplex ultrasound identifies faulty vein valves and venous reflux — the cause of varicose veins, swelling and CVI.

Blood Clots & Blockages

Ultrasound can detect blood clots (DVT) and pinpoint the exact location and severity of arterial blockages.
